Marathon Key fly fishing big school of tarpon

Marathon Key Fly Fishing

The fly fishing in Marathon Key is often overlooked. Islamorada and Key West get all the glory, but Marathon pays the bills. It has tons of back country banks that hold tarpon in good numbers, and some of the best bonefish flats in the keys. My biggest bonefish to date a little over 12 lbs was caught on an ocean side flat on Thanksgiving day. Marathon Key fly fishing charters can produce some real specimens. The fly fishing for permit and bonefish is superb and pressure is light. It really does offer it all and then some.

Marathon Key Fly Fishing Guides For Tarpon

As early as February tarpon pour into the banks behind the middle keys. Not as famed as Islamorada, this area receives little fishing pressure. Usually the tarpon here eat quite well all spring. Come May the great Migration starts and tarpon flow along the ocean side flats. Vast strings of tarpon run the beach and fishing is fantastic. The bottom here is light so you can see them coming for miles. That gives you plenty of time to get nervous! Marathon Key fly fishing for tarpon should definitely be on your bucket list.

The Seven Mile Bridge And Fly Fishing

Within sight of the Seven Mile bridge some of the best water in the Keys waits for you. Huge amounts of water pass between Florida Bay and the Atlantic here. Lots of moving water translates to lots of permit, tarpon and bonefish. There are flats here where you can catch a grand slam within a football field. The passes of the Middle Keys hold more tarpon than anywhere else. The Seven Mile bridge and Bahai Honda bridge are packed with tarpon each spring. This area also gets major Palolo worm hatches. You wouldn’t believe the number of tarpon that are within sight of the Overseas Highway. Marathon Key fly fishing and the Seven Mile Bridge area are a must for any serious tarpon angler.
